colour excess

The difference between the observed colour index of a star and the intrinsic colour index, which may be inferred from the star's spectral type. The colour excess is a measure of the degree to which the star's light has been reddened as it travels though interstellar dust. Such reddening occurs because blue light is scattered and absorbed to a greater degree than red light.
